The group was formed in 1981 in California, USA, by Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield. In 1981 Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield and Lloyd Grand recorded Metallica first ( demo ) album - No Life Til Leather. Other ex-members of the group are David Mustaine, Jef Warner and Ron McGovney. Cliff Burton came in 1982 and the first concert with him was on 5 March 1983. Kirk Hammett joined the band in 1983, the first life performance he had with the group was on 16 April 1983 .
On 10 may 1983 the boys begin to record their first album - Kill 'Em All, and on 27 may 1983 it is already done. But they do not stop, in 1984 they release their second album - Ride the lightning. They make a breake for a year, but in 1986 they recorded Master Of Puppets and a tour with Ozzy Osbourne. After the concert Metallica reach new highs, but James broke his arm skateboarding, and ofcourse he was unable to use his guitar. Then John Marshall come to help he replace James until heals.
After the tout with Ozzy, Metallica start a tour in Europe, James missed the first concert becouse his arm. The first concert with James and the last with Cliff was in Stockholm. Early the next morning ( September 26th, 1986 ) the tour bus overturn getting Cliff's life. Cliff Burton was replaced from Jason Newsted who was chosen from over 40 auditions. The first concert with the new member was on November 8th, 1986 .
The fourth album Metallica released is ...And Justice For All. The group get two Grammy for Best Metal / Hard Rock album and for the song One. The next album - Metallica ( ' The Black Album ' ) was more successful. Released in 1991 it bring to the group several awards - Grammy, MTV and American Music Awards. Nine millions copies from the album were sold only in America by July 1996, and one month later Load entered the US charts at number one. The next year Metallica released Reload. In 1998, Metallica released their longest album - Garage Inc., with its 27 songs it took place for 2 CDs .
The last album - S&M was released on November 1999. It most contains old songs which Metallica performs with symphonic orchestra. There are only two new songs in the doubled album - 'No Leaf Clover' and '-Human'. The orchestrator, has worker with many groups. His name is Michael Kamen. The album lenght is about 2 hours and 20 minutes
